A post-doc position is open in our research group to carry out research activities in the SimulaMet Interoperability Lab (SMIL) which is established in the Center for Reliable Networks and Applications (CRNA) at SimulaMet. SMIL is an experimental environment for research and innovation related to wireless technologies in a multi-vendor environment with focus on 5G and IoT. The lab has been granted dedicated 5G and 4G wireless spectrum from the Norwegian Communication Authority for wireless coverage at the Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) campus, making us one of few research institutions in the world to hold such spectrum for research purposes. 

About SimulaMet and the SimulaMet Interoperability Laboratory

SimulaMet is a publicly owned research institute located at Bislett in the centre of  Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, part of the Simula Research Laboratory (Simula) employing about 150 individuals from 29 countries and OsloMet, a university located in the centre of Oslo, with more than 20.000 students and 7 PhD programs.

SimulaMet conducts ICT research in the fields of communication technology, machine learning and software engineering. SimulaMet's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialization.

In the area of 5G communication, SimulaMet already participates in the EU H2020 research projects 5G-VINNI and 5GENESIS, working on building experimental 5G facilities. The new laboratory will extend these efforts and strengthen ongoing experimental activities by offering a hands-on environment for our researchers and collaborators to explore new innovations and perform high-impact research for industry, mobile operators, service providers and society at large. We have established 5G-NR infrastructure at our campus and leverage the Simula eX3 supercomputer as a very powerful edge computing platform. Our state-of-the-art experimental infrastructure enable applied research on fundamental telecommunication challenges such as dependable network infrastructure, front haul network with Time Sensitive Networking support, Network Function Virtualization, Software Defined Networking and Self Driving Networks. Our interest is key infrastructure functionality to support the wide range of new applications possible in 5G and beyond, which is not possible in 4G. In particular, capabilities in low and bound latency (for example 5G URLLC), high wireless throughput and slicing, which enable real-time applications such as Tactile Internet, Industry 4.0, Power Grid instrumentation and autonomous driving.

 

SimulaMet is also contributing to the OsloMet curriculum in advanced communication topics and plans to engage OsloMet student resources in experimental work related to emerging 5G services.

About the Position

SimulaMet invites outstanding applicants for one 2.5-year post-doc position, who will carry out research activities within the SimulaMet Interoperability lab which has the overall objective to create new insight and innovations in the following areas:

  • Benchmark and improve time-sensitive networking technologies for 5G networks between base stations and edge computing for 5G as part of a  Cloud Radio Access Networks (CloudRAN) architecture.
  • Study how legacy computers can be used to realize Cloud RAN by using software defined radio and lower cost of deployment by moving functionality from hardware to software. Of particular interest is real-time scheduling of Cloud RAN workloads in edge data centres.
  • Study new 5G and IoT applications enabled by edge computing using features such as low latency, high throughput and quality of service guarantees combined with edge computing capabilities available in 5G cellular networks.
  • Implement and demonstrate new use-cases with strict real-time requirements possible only with 5G-NR and edge computing.

The starting date of the position is from January 1, 2021.

Responsibilities

The positions will carry out experimental research activities in the CRNA group project that are designated from SimulaMet, under supervision and assistance of senior staff. The post-doc is also expected to actively collaborate with researchers at the other partners of the project. Writing scientific publications and software code, as well as disseminating/reporting the project’s research findings, are included in the responsibilities of the position. Moreover, the post-doc is expected to become an integral part of SimulaMet’s CRNA group, so they will contribute to strengthening the telecommunication research activities at SimulaMet.

Required profile

All applicants must hold a PhD degree in computer science, telecommunications or electronics. The applicants should also have a strong track record in scientific publication and dissemination. All applicants must have research expertise in at least two of the following subjects:

  • Software Defined Networking
  • Mobile systems
  • Software Defined Radio
  • Performance monitoring, optimization/tuning and modeling
  • Network technologies
  • Virtualization and computer architectures
  • Programming of real time systems
