Research Scientist Position at the Data Science and Knowledge Discovery Department - Simula Metropolitan Center for Digital Engineering, Oslo, Norway 

Data Science and Knowledge Discovery Department (DataSci) at SimulaMet (Oslo, Norway) has an opening for a researcher in data mining/machine learning. DataSci aims to advance the frontiers of machine learning and data mining by developing novel methods to analyze complex data sets and reveal underlying patterns. In doing so, we enhance knowledge discovery in real-world applications in a range of fields. This research scientist position will involve interactions with multidisciplinary groups consisting of applied mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers, statisticians, biologists, chemists, and clinical researchers. What we are looking for:

We are looking for a highly-motivated researcher in pursuit of excellence and impact. The position requires a PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, statistics or a related scientific discipline. Other required qualifications include 

  • a strong publication record in data mining/machine learning. Research areas of interest are, in particular, graph mining, network science, low-rank approximations, tensor decompositions, and numerical optimization, 
  • at least two years of post-doctorate research experience, with preference for those with additional experience as a research scientist, 
  • excellent software development skills proved by previously released software packages,
  • the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team, with preference to those with experience in this regard, 
  • independence and critical thinking demonstrated by publications that do not include PhD advisors, and where the candidate is often a first author or the leading author, 
  • excellent communication skills (in English),
  • sharing Simula’s core values: respect, ambition, curiosity, and excellence.

 

Desired qualifications include: 

  • hands-on experience with real data analysis, and impactful novel applications, 
  • previous experience with efficient algorithm development, randomized algorithms,
  • previous experience in writing grant applications and attracting research funding.

 

Conditions of employment

This is a permanent researcher position that comes with a competitive salary and a generous start-up package (that may involve funding for a PhD student position depending on the level of experience). The place of work is Oslo, Norway. Tasks include conducting research, supervising junior researchers, publishing high quality papers, disseminating research findings, research-based education (when relevant) and attracting external funding.
